July 20th marks a special day for Colombians: Independence Day. This national holiday commemorates the country’s declaration of independence from the Spanish Crown in 1810.
A Bit of History
The road to Colombian independence was paved with struggle and sacrifice. It began with a series of uprisings against Spanish colonial rule, culminating in the declaration of independence in Bogotá’s main square, Plaza de Bolívar.
Celebrations Across the Nation
Independence Day is a time for Colombians to celebrate their national identity and heritage. Celebrations take place across the country, featuring:
-
Parades: Colorful parades filled with music, dance, and floats are a common sight on Independence Day.
-
Fireworks: Spectacular fireworks displays light up the night sky, symbolizing freedom and hope.
-
Cultural events: Concerts, art exhibitions, and traditional performances showcase the rich cultural diversity of Colombia.
-
Picnics and gatherings: Families and friends gather for picnics and outdoor activities, enjoying delicious Colombian cuisine and spending quality time together.
